Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin defends lifestyle and takes voluntary drug test after party video leaks

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin announced on Friday that she had undergone a drug test in the wake of a leaked video showing her dancing and lip-synching at a party, according to the BBC.

Marin addressed the controversy at a news conference in Helsinki, calling the drug testing demands “unfair.”

“I didn’t do anything illegal,” Marin told reporters on Friday.

Opposition party politician Riikka Pura called on the prime minister to take a voluntary drug test, saying there was a “shadow of doubt” about her, the BBC reported.

“I consider these accusations to be very serious,” Marin said Friday. “Although I consider the demand for a drug test unfair, for my own legal protection and to remove any doubt, I have taken a drug test today, the results of which will be back in about a week.”

Marin, who became the youngest prime minister in Finnish history when she was elected in 2019, said she had no job responsibilities the weekend she was at the party.

“We did not have any government meeting during that weekend,” he said at the news conference. “I had free time and I spent it with my friends and family, and I didn’t do anything illegal.”

Earlier this week, Marin told reporters that she “represents a younger generation” and will continue to live her life however she wants, the BBC reported.

“I have a family life, I have a work life and I have free time to spend with my friends. Pretty much the same as a lot of people my age,” he said. “I’m going to be exactly the same person that I’ve been until now, and I hope that it will be accepted,” she said.

This is not the first time that Marin has been criticized by her opponents and the media for dancing and going to parties. In December 2021, Marin apologized for going to a club where she was exposed to someone with COVID-19.
