Prabal Gurung sent his New York Fashion Week models down a long, stark runway on Saturday in the shadow of the United Nations wearing an explosion of sheer and color as an ode to the world’s misfits who “often are observed and monitored, examined but invisible”. .”
The designer told The Associated Press that he discovered the building occupied by UN consulates and nonprofit organizations while biking on Manhattan’s East Side. He turned it into a white catwalk that made his revealing metallic, bondage and neon glitter looks pop.
“I wanted to create a space for this particular show where we felt what we feel in the culture itself: a little bit insecure politically, culturally, but we still want to be hopeful, we want to be optimistic,” he said. “I needed to be close to the UN reminder that our work in fashion is not done until we are vigilant and vigilant.”
Over the past year, Gurung said, he found his hope and optimism fading as the “status quo, the patriarchy” seemed increasingly unnerved by those resisting “regressive values.”

He called his misfits “my families, my tribes, my friends,” whose rights are often taken advantage of. As a creative person, Gurung said, the pandemic has reaffirmed her need to tell stories rather than just send clothes down a runway.

Her story continued in a bright pink gown of hand-embroidered sequins and multi-colored ostrich feathers, an acid-wash denim corset blazer, and a fuchsia and black mesh goddess dress. Gurung’s sheer cobalt blue pants worn with an equally sheer long-sleeved top in chartreuse that opened to reveal a black bralette moved with the model like many of her liquid looks. It was definitely a different direction for Gurung.
“Instead of just doing a regular show, I wanted to create an experience,” he told the AP. “Storytellers are healers.”
