Fashion magazine ranks the best kits of all time

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is fast approaching as the national teams begin their preparations for the global showpiece.

This year’s carnival will look a bit different, taking place right in the middle of clubbing season, at the height of European winter.

While that may mean heady, sunny days in pub beer gardens won’t be possible, we still have a football party to look forward to.

The news is already beginning to be dominated by the World Cup headlines and with a few months to go some of the kits have started to appear.

Portugal’s split kit has left a lot to be desired while a leak The supposed strip of Mexico shows that they will look amazing at the World Cup.

But what are the best World Cup uniforms ever worn? Well, to answer that question, we thought we’d go to the experts in the field, with fashion magazine Esquire choosing the 11 best shirts back in 2018.

The Danes may not have had the tournament they hoped for in France, but Peter Schmeichel looked an absolute delight in a bombshell of a goalkeeper kit.

10. England, 1982

The tricolor nature of the ’82 England strip makes it one of the most unique kits for the Three Lions. Sadly, he was unable to inspire England to great heights as he crashed out in the second round in Spain.

9. Germany, 1990

A true classic, the 1990 German strip was always going to be included. The wide flag across the chest, exaggerated logo and understated collar make for a great design piece.

8. Argentina, 1994

It’s hard to go wrong with Argentina’s famous blue and white stripes and, in truth, any of their kits could have made the cut. Esquire went with their 1994 issue and it’s hard to argue.

7. Croatia, 1998

Another nation that has regularly given us some really great kits. The 1998 vintage, with its 3D printing, looked particularly special as the Croats finished third in France.

6. Cameroon, 2002

This was always going to be a controversial pick, but sometimes controversy sells. Eyebrows were raised when Cameroon saw fit to ditch their sleeves altogether, but it went on to become one of the most iconic kits in history.

5. Mexico, 1994

This list simply would not be complete without a Mexican contribution. The 1994 design, complete with a beautiful collar and subtle red stripes, was truly a work of art.

4. France, 1998

On the backs of the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, the 1998 French jersey quickly became a true icon as the hosts achieved global glory in Paris.

3.Nigeria 1994

NIgeria’s epic 2018 kit must have been in contention, but again it’s hard to argue with the call to opt for their ’94 strip instead.

Everything from the collar to the touch of black and white designs around it is just brilliant.

2. Soviet Union, 1990

Just look at it! We were given a true work of genius when the Soviet Union appeared in 1990. The brick red shirt brushed with white is absolutely gorgeous and well deserving of its high status on this list.

Unfortunately, and almost criminally, it was never used in the tournament.

1. Brazil, 2002

The Brazilian made light work of the World Cup in 2002 and looked good doing it.

Who could forget Ronaldo Nazario’s site breaking it in this iconic yellow belt?
