Fantasy football – Three simple tips to win your autodraft

Back to school chaos. End of summer barbecues. Business trip.

As much as we try, life sometimes gets in the way of our favorite hobby.

Truth be told, that’s exactly what inspired this article. He was scheduled to participate in the fantasy football group’s weekly mock draft while flying back to Los Angeles after being in the studio for the 2022 fantasy marathon. Instead of relying on Wi-Fi at 30,000 feet, one of our editors, Joe Kaiser, suggested trying some autodraft strategies.

It was by no means a perfect draft. But I learned that a few tweaks on pick day could produce a solid team.

Obviously, building a roster in real time is still the most recommended (and satisfying) option, but ESPN Fantasy has made the autodraft feature effortlessly customizable. Doubling up during the season and working on the waiver wire is still a must, but formulating your fake football team on the spot doesn’t have to be… autodraft can save the day.

To adjust your draft settings, go to the My Team tab, then click Edit Draft Strategy. Once you see the Pre-Draft Ratings tab, adjust the ratings by dragging and dropping.

It’s a one-stop shop for personal preferences… and convenience.

Auto Turn Tips

1. Select the position you want in the rounds you want

Are you passionate about a robust RB strategy? Or are you intrigued by the Zero RB approach? Maybe getting Josh Allen out early is what you’re interested in. Or maybe he’s comfortable waiting at QB. Regardless, using the auto draft feature allows you to set it and forget it while you implement your preferred game plan.

Simply adjust each round, specifying RB, WR, TE or FLEX, to reflect which position you want to prioritize and when. The tool will take over and select the best available option when and where you have specified. I’m targeting the second tier of quarterbacks this year, so I chose the seventh round to select a quarterback in hopes of acquiring Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts or Dak Prescott (and it worked, since I got Murray). However, if you’re betting big on a Lamar Jackson rebound, then set it for a fifth-round QB acquisition.

2. Automatically fade out players you’re passing

You may be in Saquon Barkley. Or you’re a die-hard Titans fan who can’t stand supporting the Brotherly Love version of AJ Brown. No matter.

If you have no interest in a player, just keep him off your team regardless of potential value.

To do so, go to the My Team tab, then click Edit Strategy Draft. Once you see the Pre-Draft Rankings tab, simply adjust the rankings by dragging and dropping and exclude any players you don’t want by clicking the box next to their name.

You can also use this feature to prioritize your passion picks and improve your chances of joining your team. (For example, the George Pickens hype has me cooling on Chase Claypool, who I definitely should have taken down before clicking save and send.)

3. Limit the number of players in certain positions

You don’t need two fenders. Or two kickers. Or even two TE. To super-stock your bench with depth selections, load them into FLEX while setting positional limits.

This can be achieved by filling in the min/max of each position for each round in the Auto Pick Strategy tab.

I don’t normally take two quarterbacks, but I was interested in bringing out depth on the signal call with this particular drill. As has been the trend in these mocks, Aaron Rodgers went down…and landed on my team in Round 11. I would have preferred a player with more potential like Nico Collins (well done, Eric Moody) or Isaiah Spiller (on the mark). Secret Squirrel move), but knowing that one can catch last year’s MVP in the double-digit rounds certainly illuminates a variety of strategic possibilities.

Ultimately, there is no substitute for clicking and queuing while on the clock. However, when time is not on your side, ESPN’s auto-select feature offers considerable control in building your squad.
