Fall Moving Tips | UDiary

The University of Delaware is finalizing preparations to welcome approximately 4,300 new students and nearly 7,200 total students to campus housing between Wednesday, August 24 and Sunday, August 28. Most freshmen are scheduled to move into residence halls on Saturday, August 27. The start of a new academic year is an energetic time on campus and an exciting time for families and students. The UD community will come together to support students and their families during the move and Welcome Weekend, including hundreds of student staff members, full-time staff and community volunteers.

As Blue Hen families prepare to arrive on campus to move, keep these tips in mind:

Please review the University’s recent announcement on COVID-19 precautions. Masks are recommended but not required at move-in.

Before students arrive on their assigned move-in day, they are encouraged to print the parking tag, which will serve as their parking pass for the day and also provides directions to their residence drop-off area.

Don’t forget your university card, sometimes called the UD OneCard. The DNI UD serves as an access card to the student’s residence. If a student does not have their UD ID but uploaded their photo before August 19, it will be available at the nearest IT support center during the move. All others must make an appointment at the OneCard office.

Students and families are asked to make every effort to arrive during the allotted 30-minute time window as this will help control the flow of traffic in Newark.

Label all items with the student’s name, building, and room number. This will help Blue Hen Helpers get the student’s belongings to the right place.

The University hopes that families and other helpers enjoy their time with their students setting up the room, but UD asks that outside guests do their best to limit themselves to two hours for setup so that others in the building have space as well.

UD encourages first-year students to be ready at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, to join their residence hall communities, as resident assistant staff will guide students to various evening activities, such as dinners, meetings on the floor and other welcome events of 1743.

For many freshmen, this will be their first time sharing a room. It will take time and communication to get the room to the best use. Don’t worry if when families leave the day the room isn’t perfect, it will take time to figure out how best to set up the room.

Be sure to stop by the Family Farewell to receive gifts on your way out.

Follow the new Division of Student Life Instagram account for live updates during the move.
