Experts Share Their 2023 Beauty Trend Predictions

And just like that, another year has flown by. Here we are, in the last liminal weeks of December, contemplating 2023 with mixed emotions. Preeminent nostalgia? To bucket. Anxiety? A little suspicious? Yes, those too. But above all, there is enthusiasm, hope, and the determination to manifest the best versions of ourselves. Whether you do it by setting resolutions or making a vision board, the energy of the new year is inescapable. To get ahead of what’s to come in 2023, I asked a few experts for their 2023 beauty trend predictions. And boy, did they deliver.

As a beauty writer, I’m always curious about what the new year will look like for me (and me). In images, which trends will I adopt and which ones will I regret? Will new expression lines appear on my face and what skin care will I adopt to prevent them? Will I finally cut my bangs or dye my hair the auburn shade I’ve been threatening all of 2022? Only time, and seasoned veterans of the beauty industry, will tell.

more skinimalism

Skinimalism captured mainstream attention this year, as the clean look trend fueled a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the bare face and the use of fewer but better products. In 2023, this trend will continue, driven by a sustainability mindset.

The rise of ‘less but better’ is driven by our experience with Covid, the challenging economic environment and the growing awareness of the state of our planet,” says Dr. Conny Wittke, environmentalist and co-founder of Superzero. “In 2023, we will see a growing ‘new echo’ movement where a sustainable minimalist approach is preferred over wasteful consumerism, lacking style and true character.”

One step beyond sun protection

With sustainability on the brain and sunscreen slathered on from head to toe, 2023 will bring even more ways to protect our skin from environmental damage. UV rays and pollution abound, depleting collagen and decreasing skin elasticity.

“A constant increase in tropospheric ozone should emphasize the importance of using products rich in antioxidants,” says Ása Brynjólfsdóttir, Director of R&D at Blue Lagoon. She also notes that “increased heat and humidity call for more dynamic skin care. Different seasons, climates, and humidity levels will require a reassessment of skin care needs.”

Skin care as a ritual

Skin care doesn’t have to be a tedious routine. Like any daily ritual, it must be adapted to your life, your values, and your needs. 2022 introduced the skin cycle and cycle timing, and 2023 will take this further with more intuitive skincare rituals as wellness practices.

According to Giselle Go and Philipe Terrien, co-founders of DAMDAM, “The skin is a living organ and its concerns change with the seasons, the environment and our internal biology. Instead of a 10-18(!) step routine, we propose the opposite and keep it minimal with 3-5 steps to let the skin breathe and do its job.” Rotating your products keeps you in tune with your skin and its needs, instead of mindlessly applying serums and hoping for the best.

Lesley Thornton, Holistic Esthetician and Founder of KLUR, adds: “In 2023, I believe beauty practices will be embraced as part of our health and well-being and less as an indulgence. Aromatherapy will play a big role in how we partake of fragrance, and pampering will become more like home spa treatments.”

The rise of body care

The body really does keep score, inside and out. If he’s noticed his favorite skincare brands introducing their new body care lines, he’s not alone. You have your skincare routine for your face, but what about everything from the neck down? Body care skinification is here to stay.

“We will see more skincare brands taking beneficial actives from their skincare lines and applying them to products for other parts of the body,” says Nina Zilka of Alder New York. “We’ve seen how wonderful certain ingredients are for the skin, and consumers want to apply those same effects to their hair and body.” 2023 will be the year of thoughtful body care with nourishing ingredients, anti-aging properties, and even exciting beauty favorites like chemical exfoliants, retinol, and niacinamide.

Frosty Tips Take the 2020S

Nostalgic makeup and ’90s fashion looks are making a comeback, and hair trends are taking notice. Frosty ends are back, but these aren’t the over-the-top bleach looks you remember. Instead, 2023 will see everyone calling for strategic highlights for an updated “frosty” look.

To get the retro, face-framing aesthetic, says Tylor Johnson of Nous Haircare, “Tune the highlights one to two shades lighter than the client’s base color to create a dimensional monochrome look.” This brilliant hybrid effect works on any hair color and will be everywhere this winter.

Gemini Hair

Every year, our team waits for the Pinterest predictions list to check the pulse of the new year’s vibe. For hair, Pinterest says that Gemini Hair will be one of the top trends. “In 2023, two-tone braids will take off more than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are behind this growing hair color trend that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples, and pinks. Blue and black braids, plus lavender and blonde hair are all the rage. Book an appointment with your stylist before it’s too late!

big blowouts

Fluffy hair was literally big in 2022. The muse: Matilda Djerf. The tool: the Dyson Airwrap. While ’70s-inspired curtain bangs dominated our news this year, knock those bangs out of your face and embrace the ’90s with great hairstyles in 2023. With new tools and technology, you don’t have to save your hairstyles for special occasions and trips. to the living room . When it comes to styling, free your hair from those slippery buns and embrace vintage-inspired volume in 2023.

Don’t Skimp on Scalp Care

Rinse, repeat… but don’t forget your scalp. A clean scalp means long, healthy hair. While we’ve seen scalp serums emerge on the hair care scene, a full scalp treatment routine will soon be hitting your shelves in 2023.

“Scalp care is essential for overall hair health, and while people tend to focus on scalp treatments, the shampoos we use every day are essential for scalp health,” says Dr. Conny Wittke. “Hair can appear limp and lifeless or become overly greasy due to scalp buildup of hair care products, environmental or mineral factors, and chlorine from hard or pool water. Regular removal of such buildup, with a clarifying shampoo, is important for hair to look healthy, have an airy bounce, restored shine, and for styling and coloring products to work effectively.”

#barbiecore

Every year, a bold color trend emerges for only the most daring of us to try. Whether it’s platinum blonde, coppery orange or light lavender, fun shades come in and out of style like everything else. Bold Color of 2023: Bright, Pink Barbie! Barbiecore was the hottest TikTok fashion trend of the year, and Pantone’s Color of the Year is Viva Magenta. Embrace the Gen Z-approved hue with this hot hair color, if you dare.

Jamie Mazzei, creative director of NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, NY, one of the largest salons in the country, says, “If you’re looking for something a little edgier and brighter, try the #Barbiecore trend. Decide which side of the pink spectrum you want to be on, then ask your colorist to match your favorite pink. If you have blonde hair, it’s a simple process to add a beautiful shade of pink. If you have darker hair and want the pink to pop, your stylist may need to bleach your hair first.”

Makeup

lots of lining

Soft goth, indie sleaze and grunge girl, oh my! All of these vintage aesthetics have one thing in common: dark eyeliner, and lots of it (preferably smudged). And it’s coming back in 2023. Throw together ’90s/Y2K revivals and effortless beauty reigns, and here you have it: a look that’s dramatic, but also looks like you just rolled out of bed.

I saw an interview of Alexa Chung once in the heyday of rock-chic “I’m with the band” in which she described her unconventional morning makeup routine: smearing her eyeliner from the day before. While I would never advocate sleeping in your makeup, the aesthetic is one I will personally indulge in. So char your eyes vigorously. Good luck.

unnatural glow

Yes, everyone will still want that lit-from-within glow in 2023, but with a Y2K twist. Pinterest predicts that rave culture is making a comeback, so naturally its influence will trickle down to beauty. Take your shine. All that shimmer and shine is ready for 2023. Take highlighter a step further and illuminate your gaze with gemstones and glitter around the eyes, cheeks, or even around the lips. Your main sources of inspiration will be disco, Euphoria and the Roaring 20s. Anything that would have guaranteed your way into Studio 54.

Skin Supporting Makeup

Multipurpose makeup is in fashion. I’m talking about skin tints that go triple as a vitamin c serum and an spf. Lip and cheek balms fortified with hyaluronic acid. Anything that can be used multiple times in your routine and blur the line between skincare and makeup. Yes, you should still apply a generous amount of sunscreen before putting on your face. But an eyeshadow with UV-blocking properties doesn’t hurt. Be prepared for everything you put on your skin to support your skincare efforts instead of sabotaging them.
