Dutch Bros Self Service Worker Films ‘Customer’ Who Didn’t Tip

Viral TikTok images show how a Dutch Bros employee reacted when a “customer” at the self-service cafeteria didn’t tip.

The video was shared by TikToker Shayn Sath (@shaynsath), who appears to be an employee of Dutch Bros. The video appears to be entirely staged, but it nonetheless sparked a debate among viewers.

In the video, two employees attend the self-service window of the store. One of them, with his back to the window, says, “Don’t look, but this guy literally didn’t give us any tips.”

That employee then turns around and gleefully hands the customer their four-drink order. The other employee sneaks around the passenger side of the customer’s car, jumps into the front seat and stares into the customer’s face. The client and the employees appear to be friends who voluntarily agreed to film the video as a prank.

Joke or not, some viewers took the conversation about tips seriously. Some questioned why customers are expected to leave a tip at a drive-thru.

“Imagine tipping a drive-thru,” one viewer commented on the video.

“Who tips a drive thru,” commented a second viewer.

Some non-tippers said they don’t think drive-thru workers do anything worth tipping.

“What exactly are we tipping for?” an onlooker asked.

Another viewer wrote: “I only tip people who bring things to my table or my house. In a takeout or drive-thru situation, sorry folks.”

“That’s why you get paid by the hour,” someone else said, aiming to explain why they don’t tip drive-thru workers.

However, other viewers said that drive-thru workers really do deserve tips.

“For all the people who comment ‘why tip a drive-thru’ because it gives you a little more in your paycheck. because they work hard. bc is nice and deserves it,” said a TikTok user.

Another user, who claimed to be a Dutch Bros employee, said: “As someone who was trained in Dutch, they are trained to be the only company that still provides customer service, that’s why they tip.”

In a comment on the video, the TikTok creator shared his stance on tips: “Remember, tips are totally optional!”

The Daily Dot contacted the creator via a TikTok comment.
