Dr. Viral Shah on Uncovering Findings on T1D, Risk of Bone Fractures, and Osteoporosis

Viral Shah, MD, endocrinologist and scientist, discusses the growing field of research on the connections between type 1 diabetes (T1D) and osteoporosis.

There are gender differences in the risk of bone fractures, osteoporosis and type 1 diabetes that are still being explored, according to Viral Shah, MD, an endocrinologist and associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at the Barbara Davis Diabetes Center, Clinica College of Medicine. for Adults. on the Anschutz campus of the University of Colorado.

What is the relationship between type 1 diabetes and osteoporosis and bone fractures?

That’s a great question. I’ve been involved in type 1 diabetes and osteoporosis research for a couple of years now, and it’s very exciting. Little is known about how type 1 diabetes affects bones. First, we looked at the literature and tried to see what the risk of fracture is in people with type 1 diabetes, and it’s very surprising.

We found that, particularly women, postmenopausal women with type 1 diabetes have a 6-fold higher risk of fractures than women without diabetes. And not only that, men with type 1 diabetes also have a higher risk of fractures than women without diabetes. So with that research, it was a very surprising finding that the risk of fracture was very high in people with type 1 diabetes. And that made us do more research on why people with type 1 diabetes have a higher risk of fractures.
