As evidenced by the popularity of Birkenstocks (as worn, with socks, no less, by It-Girls like Chloë Sevigny) and Tommy Bahama-esque Hawaiian shirts (proudly adopted by the likes of Harry Styles and Jared Leto), it’s clear that dads have been accidental pioneers for years. Another example of this can be seen frequently on the catwalks of fall 2022.

From baggy business suits with a slim fit to oversized cargo pants, the best fall 2022 fashion trends are reminiscent of ’80s suburbia, validating Gen X parents everywhere. On the other hand, there’s plenty of freedom in style this season, thanks to the encouragement of bratty rebelliousness seen on the runways of Miu Miu, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs. Here, we share six key trends to try this season, as seen on Anya Taylor-Joy, Margot Robbie, Alexa Demie and Kendall Jenner and other stars.

Trend 1: Corporate Core

Thanks to the fall 2022 catwalks of Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu and Boss, we all suddenly wish we had preserved our parents’ ’80s and ’90s office wardrobe. Specifically from dad, as Louis Vuitton was clearly inspired by retro-style men’s suits and Stella McCartney went completely retro with oversized pinstriped suits. Miu Miu paired her oversized blazers with lingerie and mini skirts for a modern twist. The ever-chic streets of Stockholm and New York Fashion Week were also awash in this Corporatecore trend, playing with proportions by wearing full suits with femme boots and oversized blazers with tiny skirts or baggy pants. When paired with the right modern accessories, this trend offers a cool juxtaposition: it’s nostalgia with a new perspective. Rosalía is a huge fan of this trend, as seen in her latest covers and print outings.

Trend 2: Rebel Preparation

The Fall 2022 collections took last fall’s Ivy League Prep trend and gave it a bold new twist. Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Tommy Hilfiger gave unique nods to private school culture and affluent sports life, but with an interpretation that leads us to believe their muse is too cool for school. More specifically, they’re a dropout, tired of being suspended for their micro-pleated skirts (Miu Miu), oversized rugby shirts (Louis Vuitton) worn as dresses (Tommy Hilfiger). Kendall Jenner has been known to add some prep staples like sweater vests to her leggy looks.

1. The Mayfair Art Club rugby jersey dress

Trend 3: Arm Gloves

A trend once reserved for burlesque stars like Dita Von Teese, and then modernized by Balenciaga a few seasons ago, it was starting to look like gloves were only allowed on Kardashians. However, the trend has officially been democratized, as shown in Fall 2022 looks from Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Rag & Bone and Tommy Hilfiger. These designers proved that arm-length black leather gloves really can be paired with anything from evening gowns to metal-banded tops to sweaters with the sleeves rolled up all the way. Bold dresses seen in this trend include Anya Taylor-Joy and Alexa Demie.

Trend 4: cargo pants

Let’s go back to the parents. Jacquemus’ runway was awash with cargo pants, and as several seasons have proven, Jacquemus’s trend-forecasting machine always hits the spot. For fall 2022, designer Simon Porte Jacquemus himself took the final bow of it sporting a pair of pants with exaggerated pockets. Worn all over TikTok and seen on stars like Camila Cabello, Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, this trend is here to stay and is best paired with skimpy tops.

1. Good American Shine Boyfriend Cargo

Trend 5: Bomber Jackets

Another menswear-inspired trend we’re seeing are bomber jackets, modeled at the Rag and Bone and Miu Miu shows, and seen on the streets of Stockholm Fashion Week.

Katie Holmes, Rihanna and Madison Beer have all been seen in this pilot-inspired outerwear, best paired with jeans or juxtaposed with a party dress.

Trend 6: Over the Knee Boots

From Givenchy’s metalheads to Tommy Hilfiger’s rebellious outfits, the fall runways proved that over-the-knee boots work with a variety of looks. We love how Givenchy paired this shoe trend with frayed t-shirts and dresses and Tommy models wore them with oversized rugby t-shirt dresses. Not ready for this trend yet? Start with knee high boots and work your way up.
