Chloe and Halle Bailey reveal their definition of beauty

There are over 800 million videos on YouTube… and counting. For those of us who remember the golden days of the platform, meeting new talent, makeup tutorials, and personal vlogging from people all over the world was part of our everyday lives. Sharing videos with friends and family became a new way to connect with each other, and every once in a while you’d bump into someone or something that you knew was more than just a moment or a trend. It would be a nice surprise in the form of a rendition of a song by your favorite artist or a truly genuine moment from a blogger that would make you feel less alone.

There was community, and there was magic.

And that was evident 11 years ago when superstar sister-singing duo Chloe x Halle uploaded their cover of Beyoncé’s “Best Thing I Never Had.” The harmonies. Sheer vocal brilliance. The beauty. The absolute joy of singing, and singing together, brought them. It was contagious. The couple quickly became one of the internet’s top attractions, racking up millions of views, TV appearances and the title of Disney’s “next big thing” – just the tip of the iceberg of what was to come. Though their adoration for Queen Bey was clear in their many covers of her most popular songs, the duo had no idea they would end up under the bona fide music icon’s tutelage, opening up for her and husband Jay-Z for their En the Run II tour: they became five-time Grammy nominees and would soon be forging individual paths that reflect elements of their mentor’s legendary journey.

Today, Chloe and Halle Bailey are household names.

No co-signer or filing necessary. They have proven to be among the best performers, vocalists, and all-around artists in the industry. Chloe’s stage presence, sex appeal and unapologetic authenticity bring us all to our knees, while Halle’s angelic soprano, girl-next-door charm and historical turn as Ariel in the upcoming reimagining of Disney’s Little Mermaid make us glow with pride. . They are not emerging nor are they next; They are undoubtedly the stars of today. From Pepsi to Victoria’s Secret to Neutrogena, big brands trust the Chloe x Halle brand.

Shondaland caught up with the busy sisters to talk about beauty, skincare, and how they feel about everything they’ve accomplished so far.

IMAN N. MILNER: How do you both define beauty for yourselves?

HALLE BAILEY: For me, I would define beauty as feeling my best. Whether I am in my natural state or not. I feel good from the inside out. Every day is a journey to feel truly beautiful. As I get older, I learn to appreciate the little things, even the flaws. I understand that all these things make me who I am. My definition of beauty is simply accepting yourself: the good and the bad.

CHLOE BAILEY: Honestly, I agree. She couldn’t have said that more perfectly.

INM: We all know how important it is for black women to see images of themselves in the skin care and beauty industry. How does it feel to be the face of a legacy brand like Neutrogena and to have them commit to diversity in this space?

BC: It’s great that we can be the faces of Neutrogena together as black sisters. When we were first told about this, we were thrilled at the thought of the iconic face splash commercials and the opportunity to promote how beauty truly shines from the inside out. You can never be perfect, but taking care of yourself is very important, and Neutrogena’s entire morale aligns with ours. So it’s been great to do and it fits really well.

INM: When do you remember first having a product designed specifically for your skin’s needs and how did you find out about it?

HALF PENSION: I think when we were younger and we were acting, we really started playing makeup. I have dealt with more acne problems than Chloe. Our dad has flawless skin, and she got it from him. My mom has had problems with acne and I think I have her skin. So, I had to find different ways to experiment with my skin to get it to relax, but I realized that the less I do, the more pleasant my skin is to me. We discovered makeup wipes when we were younger and were obsessed with them because they made everything easier when we got offstage. We really have baby skin.

BC: We definitely do.

INM: What do you like the most about the skin you are in?

BC: What I like the most is that you don’t need too much. Every time I try to do the maximum with the products, it rejects me. My skin is very low maintenance, and I love that.

HALF PENSION: I agree sister. I think less is more for me, and that works really well.

INM: As a child, who were your beauty idols?

BC: My sister!

HALF PENSION: oh

BC: Really, you are. Diana Ross!

HALF PENSION: Beyoncé, Rihanna and my sister, yes.

INM: As two busy women in the industry, can you describe your beauty routines and must-have products?

BC: Oh, definitely micellar wipes. I love micellar water because it is super moisturizing for the skin. We are constantly on the go, putting on makeup, leaving shows and photo shoots, getting on planes; we definitely need quiet to be able to stay cool. And sunscreen!

HALF PENSION: I agree with the sunscreen. With our skin sometimes, it’s hard to find one that doesn’t leave a white cast, so I love that Neutrogena has the easy defense that works for all shades. I also love their stubborn acne patches for when I have a pimple under my skin but just can’t pop it yet. I put on one of those and it feels good.

INM: The last time I spoke to you ladies, I asked you where you saw yourself in five years. Chloe, you said you wanted to change the whole sound of the music. Halle, you said you wanted to change the world as well as music. Do you feel like you have achieved that?

BC: Oh wow, we’re doing that!

HALF PENSION: Slow but safe.

BC: You’re doing that, sure.

HALF PENSION:I love that we’ve said that, and it’s really happening. That’s really cool.
