Anne Hathaway Says Anna Wintour’s Viral Fashion Week Moment-‘Devil Wears Prada’ Was a Complete Coincidence

Fans of the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” were eager to know: was it planned?

Did Anne Hathaway use that I brought to see Anna Wintour on purpose?

The outfit in question: a Michael Kors brown crocodile-print embossed leather coat with a black turtleneck with fringe and a ponytail, which Hathaway wore while sitting next to Wintour at a Kors show during New York Fashion Week. York last month. It’s a look that seemed to be a direct reference to Andy Sachs, Hathaway’s character in the 2006 hit movie.

Oscar-winner Hathaway, a New York native who grew up in Millburn, played Andy opposite Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly in the film, an adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling 2003 book of the same name. The film was written by Aline Brosh McKenna, who grew up in Montvale, Demarest and Fort Lee.

Andy takes a job as an assistant to Miranda, a demanding fashion editor who is never happy. The character is believed to be based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour: Weisberger worked as Wintour’s assistant at the magazine for nearly a year.

A Summit native who grew up in Basking Ridge and Bernardsville, Streep was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in “The Devil Wears Prada” (she won a Golden Globe). Patricia Field was also nominated for her costume design in the film.

So the look: that brown leather jacket, that black turtleneck, that fringe. All Andy, right?

Well, something like that.

The character wears a similar outfit at the end of the film. He doesn’t work for Miranda anymore, he left her assistant job, but he sees his old boss on the street and waves at him (Miranda doesn’t wave back).

Hathaway wore the Kors outfit that was reminiscent of the look from the Kors show attended by Wintour and other celebrities including Serena Williams and New York Mayor Eric Adams.

Yes, he sat right next to Wintour. But no, she didn’t mean for the outfit, which included a matching crocodile-style leather miniskirt, to reference her character from “Devil Wears Prada.” Although she made catch the resemblance, almost immediately.

“It was by accident,” Hathaway, 39, told NBC’s “Today” show while promoting her upcoming movie “Armageddon Time,” which was shot in New Jersey and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

“I was supposed to wear something else, the shoes didn’t fit me, this was the other outfit that came in, and then my stylist…said, ‘Oh, I know what to do,’ and lifted my hair. in a ponytail, and I looked in the mirror and thought, ‘Oh, that’s funny. I wonder if anyone will notice. They realized.”
