African-American Art from the Permanent Collection”

EAST GREENSBORO, NC (September 1, 2022) – The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University present a new art exhibition, “Inner Beauty: African-American Art from the Permanent Collection.” The on-site exhibition features fifteen works from the permanent collection and opens on September 1.

Comprised of art that spans media, time periods, and cultures, the “Girl Power!” exhibition shows courage, agency and presence of women in art. Works by noted artists such as Norman Barbee, John Biggers, and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe present a variety of themes that exude a captivating presence while acknowledging the contributions African-American artists have made to the American art scene.

Featured works in the exhibition include “Untitled Landscape” by Harlem Renaissance artist Charles Alston, “Sunday Promenade” by Paris-trained Hale Woodruff, and “Glimpse of Jupiter” by Alma Thomas, the first African-American woman to have her work at the White House. permanent art collection.

“This exhibition will showcase both the diversity of African-American art and the University Galleries’ permanent collection,” said Paul Baker, Ph.D., director of the University Galleries. “It is essential that museums and galleries showcase the power and purpose of black art and material culture.”

The University Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Saturdays by appointment. The exhibits are free and open to the public. Group tours are welcome.
