To smooth out wrinkles: try ‘Slugging’

TikTokers and YouTubers are singing the praises of skin-plumping “battering”: slathering and saturating the skin with a thick Vaseline-based salve before bed.

WHY IT WORKS: “This technique locks in moisture deep into the many layers of the skin to prevent water loss that can make wrinkles that much more apparent,” says New York City-based dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. His advice from her? Opt for an ointment infused with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The ultra-hydrating combo helps plump skin to reveal a soft, supple complexion at dawn.

DO: Apply a dime-sized amount of ointment all over clean, dry face before bed; rinse skin in the morning.

To Stuff Your Pout: Try Mint Gloss

To simulate the look of a fuller pout in seconds, the TikTok creators are cleverly adding peppermint oil into their favorite lip gloss before swiping the formula onto their lips.

WHY IT WORKS: The menthol in peppermint oil has a tingling sensation that when applied topically increases blood flow to the lips, temporarily “inflaming” them, says Michigan-based plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, author of The Age Fix. . Additionally, the oil is rich in vitamins A and C, which work together to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin (skin-firming proteins that diminish with age, leaving lips thinner) to “re-plump” the lips. The result? Voluminous lips now and later!

DO: Add four drops of peppermint essential oil to a lip gloss bottle; mix to match. Apply a light layer to lips and allow to absorb.

To reduce ruddiness: try aloe vera ‘ice cubes’

YouTube and TikTok beauty videos abound touting the benefits of rubbing frozen aloe vera leaves on your face to quickly relieve redness from rosacea breakouts, hot flashes, and more.

WHY IT WORKS: The plant’s saponins strengthen the skin’s barrier to calm inflammation and prevent future breakouts, says dermatologist Dr. Jaliman. And applying it frozen takes the sting out of irritated skin, while constricting blood vessels to reduce redness. Bonus: The icy cold soothes facial puffiness and reduces puffiness for a slimmer face in seconds.

DO: Cut a fresh aloe leaf (found in grocery stores and health food stores) into two-inch pieces, place on a baking sheet, and place in the freezer overnight. When irritation or breakouts occur, massage a “cube” into face for two minutes and allow residue to absorb.

To Enhance Features: Try Vaseline ‘Highlighter’

We love how the versatile Vaseline tackles so many beauty concerns, from hydrating skin to preventing “grease rub.” The new way Instagram influencers are using the medicine cabinet staple? To create an instant facelift effect.

WHY IT WORKS: Placing the light-reflecting jelly on the high points of the face helps to optically enhance features to compensate for sagging skin and drooping features, says makeup artist Amy Zdunowski-Roeder, who has worked with Kristen Wiig and Malin Akerman. Also cool? Shimmering Jelly gives skin a healthy, dewy glow.

DO: After applying makeup, apply a pea-sized amount of Vaseline to the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, brow bones, forehead, chin, and Cupid’s bow; blend with fingers.

To erase a double chin: try self-tanning contour

The clever twist on outline that’s all over TikTok? Switch from bronzer to self-tanner to sculpt and slim the face.

WHY IT WORKS: “The sun-kissed color creates a more natural-looking, slimming shade that instantly recedes a double chin,” says Zdunowski-Roeder. “And it lasts from seven to 10 days!”

DO: Add a pump of self-tanning mousse to a paper plate, dip a makeup brush into the bronzer, then gently dab into areas of the face where you would normally put bronzer, such as the hollows of the cheeks, along the perimeter of the face. (such as the jawline and hairline) and the neck. Blend with a makeup sponge to remove harsh lines; let sit for an hour before washing face.

To revitalize the skin: try the facial ‘shave’

If you scroll through beauty TikToks quickly, you’ll be inundated with videos of women shaving their faces with a small, scalpel-like blade to make their skin glow.

WHY IT WORKS: This technique, also known as dermaplaning, not only removes peach fuzz from your face, but also exfoliates the buildup of dead, dry skin cells to reveal the new, glowing skin underneath, says Dr. Jaliman. An added bonus: any skincare applied after shaving will absorb deeper into the skin for increased radiant results.

DO: Tighten dry skin, then hold a facial razor at a 45-degree angle against the skin and shave downward with short, smooth strokes. Take care to go over each area only once, to avoid irritation.
