Following My Heart – Kent State Golden Flashes

following my heart

When it came time to choose a specialization, it wasn’t technically a difficult decision, but I still had some concerns.

Like I said before, a big motivating factor for coming to Kent State was its revered fashion program, but still, fashion isn’t exactly the most common, everyday major, is it?

Was I putting myself in a successful position after college?

After discussing this with my family, they gave me some good advice: study what you love. And fashion has always been so close to my heart.

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment my love for fashion began, but I remember my mom making all these dance outfits for me when I was little. And she was always begging him to let me help. I was fascinated with the design process.

Like threading a needle, I was hooked.

As a junior now, my official major is fashion merchandising, with a minor in fashion media.

I feel beyond blessed that Kent State allows me to pursue both of my passions in and out of athletics.

It has made a world of difference in my life.

I also made the decision, similar to the one I made many years ago when I put away my dance shoes, that I will hang up my football shoes once I graduate from Kent State.

I don’t know what the future holds for me in the fashion industry, but I can’t wait to see what it looks like.

From midfield to writing for Vogue?

Create my own company?

Design my own clothes?

I look forward to exploring all of these different avenues and am very grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have brought me to this point.

All those years ago, I never would have imagined that my dance performances would inspire me to live my dream of playing midfield like Lindsey Horan at the DI level and studying fashion at one of the best programs in the country.

But that is exactly what happened.

When it came to dance, soccer, and fashion, I always listened and followed my heart. It has helped me achieve successes and achievements I never thought possible, and I have no plans to stop listening to it anytime soon.
