How to Score Goals in Mario Strikers Battle League

As the old saying goes, you can’t win if you get zero. Offense is very important in Mario Strikers Battle League, and while the game has some pretty solid tutorials that teach you the basics, there are some helpful hints that the game doesn’t tell you that make it much easier to score goals.

Look at the positioning of Boom Boom

Boom Boom is the goalkeeper for both teams in Mario Strikers Battle League, and following his position is key to scoring goals. If he is hanging off the left side of the goal, he shoots a charging shot to the right and vice versa. And, if he deflects a well-placed shot, he charges in there and tries to hit a follow-up shot to the opposite side of the goal.

Move boom boom around

Boom Boom is fast… but it’s not that fast. He tries to place two players on opposite sides of the goal. Pass from one player to another and then quickly pass back to the player who originally passed the ball. Then aim your shot in a straight line from the player with the ball. Most of the time, Boom Boom will freeze in his tracks and watch the ball roll past him.

Remember to curve your shot

When you start charging your shot with the A button, you can position the control stick to aim your shot. Pressing up or down on the control stick will change which side of the goal you’re aiming at, while holding the control stick left or right will determine whether you aim your shot high or low. From our experience, Boom Boom seemed to have a harder time handling shots aimed high.

High technical captains can score well at kick-off

Whichever character you choose first on the character selection screen will become the character that will handle the kick-off every time a goal is scored. Therefore, it is recommended that you choose the player with the highest technical skill to act as your captain. Right as kick-off begins, if you aim your shot high and to the left side of the goal, Boom Boom will just completely miss the ball about a third of the time. It is a very easy technique to try to get a quick goal right after your opponent scores.

Fully loaded close-ups with shooting-focused characters

It is usually easiest to score right on the first white line of the field. It’s especially easier to score here if you have a character with a high shot attribute, because his shots hit harder and fly faster. Even if it doesn’t go in, the stronger the character’s shot, the more likely Boom Boom will get dizzy, allowing for an easy follow-up shot.

Run to the line when you get a star

It can be difficult to make a fully charged shot at the white line without getting hit. That is why the star is such a powerful element. If you get the star, wait until you have the ball to use it. Once you have the ball, use the star and run to that white line in front of Boom Boom. Then, fully charge your shot, aim for one of the corners, and let it rip. Most of the time, you will score a goal.

Use corner kicks to your advantage

If you find yourself in the corner, try to make a high pass across the field to the other side of the goal. Boom Boom already has trouble defending high shots, so if you catch him shooting the ball across the field and then hitting a high shot, he’ll have pretty much no chance. Remember, you can do this type of pass by holding ZL, pointing the reticule where you want to pass the ball, and pressing Y.

Hyper Strike Tips and Tricks

Hyper Strikes are a great way to score goals in Mario Strikers Battle League. Remember, if you land a Hyper Strike, it’s worth two goals! That’s why it’s worth working on your Hyper Strike strategy with these tips below.

Fight for goal during a Hyper Strike

Whether you’re on offense or defense, you’ll want to make a break for goal as Boom Boom tries to defend a Hyper Strike. If you’re on offense and he manages to defend it, he’ll likely be stunned, leaving an opportunity for an easy goal. And if you’re on the defensive, you’ll want to prevent exactly that scenario from happening! Don’t be afraid to let tackles and items fly in this scenario, even if it means giving the opposition some free items. It’s worth it.

Prioritize grabbing the Hyper Strike orb

When the orb appears, you need to make it your number one priority to go out and grab it. Pressing L or ZL in defense to switch characters will help you get there fast. And remember, you have to act fast once you get it, because you only have 20 seconds to fire a Hyper Strike!

You can execute a hyperstrike down the midfield line

Whether you’re two feet or twenty feet from the target, it makes no difference to your Hyper Strike attempt. So if you run into some space and you’re right in the middle of the field, fire off your Hyper Strike!

You can still use items during a Hyper Strike

If an opponent hits you during a Hyper Strike, your attempt will end and you will likely lose the energy status needed to succeed. So, you have to defend yourself! That’s where your articles come in. It can be tricky to pull off, but even when you’re trying to time your Hyper Strike meter, you can still press X to fire your items. If an enemy is about to ruin your big moment, shoot them a projectile or banana to stay safe. Or better yet, wait until you have a star to perform your Hyper Strike when no one can stop you.

How to play defense

Of course, you need to play defense as well as the offensive side of things. Here are some tips and tricks to help you keep the ball out of your own net in Mario Strikers Battle League.

End the clock when I’m leading

If you are two or more goals ahead, don’t be afraid to take your time and let the clock tick down. For example, when your own goalkeeper fields the ball, he will hold it for a few more seconds if you don’t press any buttons. This cuts down on valuable clock time your opponent desperately needs to score.

Intercept lob passes

Unless a pass is executed at the perfect time, it can be intercepted. Lob passes are especially dangerous, so you’ll want to do everything you can to intercept them. To do this, switch to your closest player with L or ZL and hold A or B while the ball is in the air. This can lead to some critical stops that can prevent the opponent from scoring.

Don’t be afraid to hit your opponents…even without the ball

The rules of Mario Strikers Battle League work like this: If you attack an opponent without the ball, their team receives a free item. That may discourage you from hitting an opponent without the ball, but don’t let it. There are some situations where it is necessary. If you’re both chasing a fumble, if Boom Boom is fending off a Hyper Strike, or if he’s receiving a perfect pass, you should feel free to tackle the opponent and deal with the consequences later.

Fully charged tackles work regardless of strength

If you play as Toad and face a Bowser in full armor, all hope is not lost! A normal or partially charged tackle won’t do it, but a perfectly charged tackle will take the ball away from any opponent, regardless of size disparity.

Don’t charge tackle every time

It can be tempting to charge your equipment every time to get the most bang for your buck. But sometimes it’s more effective to just make a quick tackle to trip up your opponent. This is especially true for characters with a high Strength attribute, as it doesn’t take much to push the ball away from other players.

Remember to Sprint!

This applies to both offense and defense, but don’t forget to dash while holding ZR. It can help you turn balls over faster and create some distance from your opponent when you are handling the ball.
