The 2021 WNBA Finals rematch did not disappoint, as the Chicago Sky held off a surge of Phoenix Mercury in the third quarter to secure a 73-70 win.

Before the game, All-Star shooting guard and former Sky player Diamond DeShields received her championship ring. Chicago head coach James Wade said he is proud of DeShields and that she appears healthy.

When the game started, it was all Sky in the first half, or so it seemed before WNBA great Diana Taurasi was ejected late in the second quarter for arguing with the umpires. Taurasi’s ejection sparked a 21-8 run for the Mercury.

Phoenix continued that momentum by outscoring the Sky 31-16 in the third quarter.

But the Sky got aggressive in the fourth to come back and secure a home win.

“I wanted to be aggressive with the rim and luckily I was able to do that tonight,” said Courtney Vandersloot, who scored 12 points in the final frame to lead Sky to victory.

Vandersloot finished the night with 18 points, six assists and two rebounds. Overall, Sky put together a solid offensive performance as four players finished with double-digit points. Rookie shooting guard Rebekah Gardner had 10 points and had a pair of steals off the bench.

What’s next?

The Chicago Sky will head to Atlanta at the end of the week to take on the Dream on Friday, June 3. Kickoff is at 6:30 pm CT and the game will air on Marquee Sports Network and Bally Sports Southeast.
