Styling Anne Hathaway, the Last Face of Cartier, Vuitton Celebrates ‘Air Force 1’ – WWD

HATHAWAY FLY: Anne Hathaway has swept the Cannes Film Festival 2022.

With the help of her stylist Erin Walsh, the award-winning actress has turned up in some of the most fashion-forward outfits for her debut at the coveted event, wearing the likes of Armani Privé and Gucci, among others.

Fans have praised Hathaway’s seemingly effortless and timeless style, and the fashion watchdog account Diet Prada even paid tribute to her memorable outfits on Instagram, saying, “Anne won Cannes.”

This is Hathaway’s first time attending the international film festival, so Walsh said she wanted to “really honor that moment” by aligning that experience with her outfits.

“You always want to create a statement that is both current and timeless,” Walsh told WWD. “You always want to do something that feels innovative and fresh and fun. I feel like you’re looking at her on that rug and she’s meant to be there. So the clothes are the cherry on top of that fact.”

Hathaway started the week strong, attending the premiere of her upcoming film “Armageddon Time” in a custom sequined white Armani Privé dress, featuring a small cutout at the midriff and matching shawl off the shoulders with a long train. She also wore Bulgari’s Mediterranean Reverie necklace and a matching sapphire ring from her fine jewelry collection, making her debut as a brand ambassador.

She continued her streak of standout looks when she channeled a ’60s mod girl in a blue and black Gucci mini dress with a cone-detailed bustier and black sequin skirt. Her hair was styled in a bun half up, half down.

When it comes to which outfit has been her favorite at Cannes, Walsh says it’s hard to pick one. “What was so funny about all of them is that they were all so different,” she said. “So I can’t say which one. It’s like your children, you love them for different reasons.”

Hathaway was also seen in a colorful Schiaparelli two-piece suit from the brand’s spring 2022 collection. Later, she took on the preppy-chic look in a belted, collared tweed dress by Louis Vuitton.

To complete her Cannes fashion week, Hathaway wore a Valentino off-the-shoulder jumpsuit in the bright pink hue that is now the brand’s signature.

“It’s funny to see this wild reaction, but that’s not why I do it, you know?” Walsh said Hathaway’s outfits went viral on social media. “Doing it for the answer isn’t necessarily the point. It’s just part of it. Of course, you want things to be well received, but it’s not just about that either.”

Hathaway and Walsh first began collaborating in the fall of 2019, when the actress was pregnant with their son Jack, who is now two years old. Since then, Walsh has helped style Hathaway for some of the year’s biggest events, including award shows, fashion weeks and premieres of her projects.

The stylist, who also works with Adriana Lima, Ashley Park and Juno Temple, describes Hathaway’s style as “upbeat, fun, natural and glamorous.”

“With fashion, I think he just gets it. She has this kind of encyclopedic brain that she knows what she might resonate with on a particular occasion,” Walsh said. “So if we’re talking about Cannes specifically, it’s not like we created these looks in a vacuum. We definitely had the whole lexicon of its historical context and different silhouettes and references in mind, and it informed what we ended up doing. But with that said, one of the reasons why Annie is such a brilliant actress is the same.”

Since they began working together, Walsh has stated that collaborating with the actress has been “an absolute dream.”

“If I had to use the word muse, I would use it here because that’s who she is,” he said. — CONCHITA WIDJOJO
