JOHANNESBURG – Soweto Fashion Week (SFW) attendees said they were excited about the show’s return.

The fashion extravaganza marked its return with a sold-out performance at Johannesburg’s Soweto Theatre, as fashionistas returned to enjoy the seasonal clothing themed show.

Audience members said the show was a significant moment for the township, as SFW was an important part of the culture.

Attendees couldn’t contain their excitement as the models walked across the dimly lit stage, showing off different outfits.

While the 2022 show was a first for many, it was a nostalgic moment for others.

Beyopo, who is now a qualified designer, recalled the first time he attended the show when he was still in high school.

“I always wanted to be a designer and we got a student pass so we were standing in the back in uniform!” he said.

Beyopo said that he continues to support SFW for the role it played in his life as an aspiring designer.

“As a designer, I am definitely here to support. I feel like as I am from Sowetan this is my home so this is a place to start,” she added.

Another audience member said that he constantly attended the show because it was affordable and allowed ordinary Soweto people to get a taste of high fashion.

While the audience said the 2022 show was the perfect way to spend a Friday night, many were already looking forward to the next show.

SFW founder Stephen Manzini said taking part in the show’s relaunch was a huge success after the COVID-19 pandemic led to its two-year hiatus from the runway.

He added that although the show still had a long way to go, it was headed in the right direction.

“I think this is a great start! We look forward to a bigger and better show next year. I think the designers have a lot of potential,” she said.
