Loewe’s pixelated real world fashion is breaking my brain

Crossovers from real life to digital are a big thing right now. We have seen many fashion brands ‘enter the metaverse’ with virtual collections. But Spanish fashion house Loewe has gone full circle with a real-life fashion collection inspired by pixel art, and people are confused.

What? How? Can this be real? are the typical responses on TikTok and Twitter to the Loewe fashion show for the launch of its SS23 collection. The event featured IRL clothing that looked like it was ripped straight out of Minecraft, but yeah, it’s actually real clothing (if you’re more interested in the virtual world, check out our guide, what is the metaverse?).

Next in line is a collection of creative pixels from Spanish fashion house Loewe. That you remember something? That’s right, the best-selling game in the world, Minecraft. The collaboration is not official, the toy served as a source of inspiration. #wtf #minecraft pic.twitter.com/mciUb4Mm8fOctober 3, 2022

Unveiled at Paris Fashion Week, Loewe’s chunky pixel designs appear to have used stiff fabric to create clever 3D stitching with blocky contours that perfectly capture the look of pixel art, right down to the inconsistent pixel size, real irregular ropes of the hoodies. The effect works when viewed in 2D (the pieces appear to have no backs), but they have more movement than you’d expect (at first we thought maybe the details were just painted on).

“I’m so confused, how does it look like this, and where can I get one to blow people’s minds.” one person wrote on Twitter. “Designer clothes that I would really like to buy. The illusion alone makes it worth it. It would look so good on display or to wear once in a while just to confuse people’s minds,” someone else said. Here are some more reactions. Others have been comparing the collection to everything from children’s costumes to A-ha’s famous Take on Me video.

The pixel line appears to be hint only, at least for now. We’re not sure we’d use them. Then again, it’s very well executed, and we’d probably be more inclined to pay for this IRL pixel fashion than virtual clothing from Meta or Ralph Lauren’s Fortnite collection.
