Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire’s weekly look at the daily lives of some of the most innovative women in their industries. Have you ever wondered how they do it all in one day? Here is your answer.

Cleansers, night creams, eye creams, lipsticks, foundations – Kate Hudson has multiple holy grails in every category. And she could talk about the pros of it ad nauseam. She tries on makeup like it’s going out of style and has even formulated some serums and moisturizers in collaboration with Juice Beauty. In short: she knows what she’s doing. It would have been easy for her to put her name on a skincare brand and preach Andie Anderson-style “How to Have Great Skin”; there was no shortage of opportunities. But for Kate, beauty isn’t ~exclusive~ about clichés. It’s about health, movement and wellness.

“Obviously it’s a lot of fun to talk about beauty products, but the reality is that if you don’t feel good inside, none of it matters,” the Almost Famous star tells Marie Claire. “So what are we internally and actively doing for our brains? What is our mental activity that allows us to feel beautiful? Then we can put on all the makeup and have fun with it. And it really is a lot of fun.”

As such, she has created a balanced beauty routine, both in life and in business. She gets moving at regular and co-founded athleisure brand Fabletics. She maintains a balanced diet and has created a comprehensive line of supplements through InBloom. She has a very extensive skincare routine and has launched a handful of products in collaboration with Juice Beauty. Do you want to know how he does it all? Read on to see what mantras, products, and habits help Kate get through the day.

Get up and shine

“I find it very difficult to sleep after eight, as usual. Seven is the normal time I wake up, sometimes earlier. I am a total morning person. I mean, I like my nights out, but even if I’m out, I’m awake. The first thing I do every morning is sit up in bed and not look at my phone. I try to daydream a little, look out the window, wake up my brain and try not to go into immediate mode. Then I leave my phone in my bathroom. I’ve really been trying not to look at it until after the kids go to school. I think it’s actually one of the hardest habits I have. It reminds me of the days when I didn’t have a phone to distract myself from anything. If I couldn’t sleep, maybe I’d turn on the TV or read a book or pick up a landline phone and call my friends. I realized that those moments are really important to what happens in the middle: it’s the time for you to really dream up ideas.”

morning maintenance

“In the mornings, I only wash my face with water. I find that my face gets too bare when I wash it too much, it becomes dull and weird. You know, the water does a good job and the washcloth is a bit of an exfoliant. Then I’ll do all my serums, I change them all the time. I have three that I selected with Juice Beauty and they all do different things for my skin when it needs it.”

Fitness Fix

“My mother [Goldie Hawn] and I have a friend, Dan Buettner, and he’s the guy from the ‘Blue Zone.’ He studies centenarians and longevity, so he goes around the world and studies what these people are doing that we should learn from. One of the things is that they don’t do high-octane exercise. He is finding that people who walk a lot, people who walk up steep hills eight or nine times a day and move constantly without putting a lot of stress on the body [live the longest]. So, I come from a different training school. I don’t believe in overexertion. I like low impact, I do a lot of functional movement. I like my yoga, I like my pilates and I walk every day. I’m the type of person who takes the stairs, not the elevator. Our bodies need to be working, but you don’t necessarily have to be running from tigers.”

power start

“After a workout, I have a protein shake and load it up. Let’s say I’m making a Beauty Aura protein shake. I’ll start with a collagen base, I like vanilla, and then I’ll add my Beauty Aura in there. I’ll also put Immune Powder in there, add coconut water and berries. It is nice and fruity. I created each product to have a holistic approach with immediate and long-term effects. I also take my Daily Essentials every day, so those are my vegetables, my minerals, and my vitamins.”

characteristic appearance

“Honestly, I have always found my favorite style to be a tan style. I’ll do a really quick CC cream, then I’ll put on the bronzer, and then I’ll do this Tarte blush that I still have from 2004. I know I should throw it out, but I put it away, I might as well not let it go. It’s my favorite.

For the eyes, I always wished I was the girl who could make the big line. But I can’t, I’m not that girl. I have to make a crease above my crease because my eye is very droopy and flat. Do you know who made a really good matte palette recently? Gwen Stefani. I use it all the time. Her eyeliners are also very pretty. For mascara, I have been using Serge Lutens. Is incredible. It’s not super thick, it’s really black and thin. It’s great for long lashes and doesn’t weigh it down.”

Characteristic scent

“Anything with orange blossom. I like Jo Malone, but I also really like Le Labo’s.”

cheap but elegant

“Depends on which pharmacy you’re talking about. There are some that have what I like the most: Egyptian magic. That is my favorite balm. I put it on my kids, I use it for diaper rashes, I put it on my lips and on my elbows. I will use it on my hair in the summer, it is so good. The other drugstore product that I really like is the Maybelline mascara. It’s always a good mascara.”

beauty icon

“That is so difficult. I really love women and I think there are so many beautiful women. I have some female companions that I find simply stunning, and then I have some older women that I find unbelievably beautiful, like Jane Birkin. I like the most rock girls. That is my energy. To me, Stevie Nicks is the ultimate beauty icon. But she was also growing up in the supermodel era of the ’90s. I was the kid who grew up watching “Freedom! 90” music video that was like, ‘Oh my gosh, these women are just…I don’t even know how that happens.’ Christy Turlington to me was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was so natural and so different and so interesting. But Kate Moss? I was like, ‘Oh, that’s my girl. She was a bit younger than the other girls. I remember seeing the energy of it. She was so unpredictable, a little bit rebellious, and her face was beyond.”

PM routine

“Before I go to bed or start my nightly skincare routine, I’ll take a little InBloom Dream Sleep, about an hour before I’m ready to sleep. Completely calms my system. For skin care I have been using the Beautycounter Oil Cleanser and I love the Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser it is really good. I also try all the Juice Beauty products and their Probiotic Cleanser. After that, it depends. Once a week, I will do GoopGlow. I think it is one of the best products and my skin loves it. I usually do two serums. Sometimes they are my Juice Beauty. I also love Symbiome. I like everything they do; They are one of my all time favourites. Then I take a fan and fan my skin so it absorbs. I get into it a lot.

Omorvizca has a Midnight Glow Mask, so sometimes I wear it at night. I love Gwyneth’s Night Cream and Juice Beauty Overnight Stem Cell Cream. And right now, I’m using Dr. Barbara Sturm’s eye cream.”
