kArtana is a Grass- and Steel-type Ultra Beast that originates from another world. His paper-thin body is like a sharp sword. Learn which Pokemon will be most effective in Raid Battles against Kartana, how to catch Kartana after winning a Raid Battle, and how best to use Ultra Beast after you’ve caught it.

As a Grass- and Steel-type Ultra Beast, Kartana is vulnerable to Fire- and Fighting-type attacks. When selecting Pokemon for your Kartana Raid Battle lineup, it’s helpful to pick Pokemon that have a Fast Attack and a Charge Attack of one of these types if you want to deal as much damage as possible. It’s not necessary to choose only Fire- or Fighting-type Pokémon, but a Pokémon that shares a type with these attacks will benefit from an attack bonus of the same type, allowing these attacks to deal 20% more damage.

If you have multiple Pokemon that know Fire and Fighting-type attacks, choose the Pokemon with the highest CP and the best overall stats. Fire-type attacks deal the most damage, and Pokemon with Fast Attacks and Fire-type Charged Attacks should be prioritized. Remember that the speed of victory affects the number of Premier Balls you will receive at the end of a successful Raid Battle, so bring your strongest Pokémon and defeat Kartana as quickly as you can.

After a successful Kartana raid, you will have a limited number of Premier Balls that you can use to catch Kartana, so make each one count. You can earn additional Premier Balls by battling with friends and defeating Kartana faster.

In an encounter with Kartana, your chance of catching him is higher when the target ring is small enough that you can get some great throws. Curveball pitches can further improve your chances. But work within your abilities: If you don’t think you can reliably make great curveball pitches, aim for good pitches or big pitches rather than risk missing the target ring entirely.

Kartana won’t make it easy for you if you stand still while trying to catch him. Don’t waste your Premier Balls by throwing them while he’s moving. Look at Ultra Beast to get an idea of his movement cycle and the pauses between the cycles. During one of these pauses, wait for the target ring to reappear, then throw it when it starts to get smaller to increase your chances of making a Great Throw or Excellent Throw.

Berries can help you catch Kartana. A Razz Berry will make it easier to catch, and a Golden Razz Berry will make it much easier to catch. If you fail to land any throws, Nanab Berry will calm Kartana down, making his movements less erratic and allowing you to land accurate throws more easily. If Kartana needs extra Candy, using a Silver Pinap Berry will make Kartana easier to catch and grant him extra Candy when caught.

Buddy Pokémon with a Buddy Level of Great Buddy or higher have the Catch Assist perk. If a Pokémon, even an Ultra Beast, deflects a Poké Ball, your friend might retrieve it for a second chance to catch it!

Like all Ultra Beasts, Kartana is hard to catch, so don’t be discouraged if he gets away. Get a second wind by stocking up on useful items, like Max Potions, Max Revives, and Golden Razz Berries, and try again.

Kartana Starting CP Range: 2010–2101

Kartana Starting CP Range with Weather Boost: 2512–2626

Fast attacks available: Razor Leaf (grass), Air Slash (flying)

Available Charged Attacks: Leaf Blade (Grass), X-Scissor (Bug), Night Slash (Dark), Aerial Ace (Flying)

As a Grass- and Steel-type Ultra Beast, Kartana is resistant to Normal, Water, Grass, Electric, Poison, Psychic, Rock, Dragon, Steel, and Fairy-type attacks. Kartana’s unusual dual typing and long list of resistances could make Kartana an interesting addition to your next GO Battle League raid or lineup. Because Kartana has yet to establish itself in the GO Battle League, it’s hard to predict how it will perform. While Fire and Fighting-type Pokémon are prominent in GO Battle League, an Ultra Beast with resistance to ten different types of attacks is hard to miss.

Good luck with your next raid, and remember to check Pokemon.com/Strategy for more tips on Pokémon GO, video games, and the Pokémon TCG.
