“Jelly skin” is the latest beauty trend taking TikTok by storm. The skincare trend is all about plump, vibrant, and healthy-looking skin. It was coined by creator and beauty enthusiast Ava Lee.

A few years ago, K-beauty brought us crystal skin, and everyone embarked on a quest to get their most luminous, translucent skin yet. Although glowing skin is still in fashion, a new skincare trend called “jelly skin” is currently taking TikTok by storm. Coined by content creator and beauty enthusiast Ava Lee aka @glowwithava, the trend focuses on achieving skin that is not only glowing but also healthy and smooth.

What is jelly skin?

“By definition, jelly skin is having skin that’s so stretchy that when you move it, it bounces back, like jelly,” Lee tells POPSUGAR. It is not only about external skin care, but also internal well-being. That includes eating balanced meals and living a healthy lifestyle to nourish your skin from the inside out.

Lee came up with the term after getting a facial from celebrity beautician Lord Gavin McLeod-Valentine, who treats the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kate Moss, and Rosalia, to name a few. “He was blown away by how much collagen I have in my skin and how perky it was,” she says. “Although it was coined after this facial, the process to get this type of skin was a long time coming.”

Lee explains that “jelly” is actually an acronym. “J” stands for journey, since “it’s not an overnight change”; “E” stands for “eat balanced meals”; the first “L” is for “lifestyle, not just skincare”; the second “L” is for “laugh” to encourage him to “move his facial muscles”; and lastly, “O” stands for “old is not bad: age gracefully with smooth skin.”

Jelly skin vs glass skin

Jelly skin and glass skin have some similarities, but there are a few key differences. “Glass skin has more to do with the outward appearance of your skin: how it’s so translucent that it looks like glass,” says Lee. “This is simply achieved with a good skin care regimen and the products that are applied.” It’s just skin deep, whereas jelly skin is all about what’s going on below the surface.

“Jelly skin is so much more than the outward appearance,” she says. “It’s about having a lifestyle that focuses on external and internal nutrition that allows you to have smooth and elastic skin, and this cannot be achieved with a skin care product alone. In any case, there are Less emphasis on skincare products, but more emphasis on your diet, facial massage, and lifestyle in general.”

How to get jelly skin

Because jelly skin starts from within, Lee’s number one tip is to eat a balanced diet packed with colorful foods rich in fiber and collagen. When it comes to products, she highlights the importance of facial exercise and massage either with the hands or with tools like gua sha, which is included in the Flora & Noor Restoration and Renewal Kit ($38). More advanced tools would be the ReFa Face Roller Tool ($200) or the NuFace Trinity Toning Device ($288, originally $339).

“And above all, be patient with the results—it’s not an overnight change,” says Lee.
