Florida completes sweep in dominant fashion

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida swimming and diving began its 2022-23 campaign with three wins on Friday. The women defeated Nova Southeastern 244-44 and Arkansas 219-79 in a doubleheader, while the men outscored Nova Southeastern 252-42.

The Gators finished with seven B cuts on the day and won all but one event.

Florida started fast, winning the combined 200 relay on both sides to open the meet. The men had four relay teams finish in the top five, while the women earned 13 points for first and third place.

Gainesville native Talia Bates, her senior season with four wins, claiming first place in the 100 back, 100 fly, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Newcomers

In his first collegiate action, Joshua Liendo finished three-for-three in first place. The Canadian Olympian swam the third leg of the 200m medley relay in his first college career, before following it up with a win in the 50 free at 19.69, earning a B cut and a win in the 100 fly at 48.06.

In the 1000 free, Hayden Miller swam 9:53.52, more than 13 seconds ahead of the field in his collegiate debut. The freshman from Houston, Texas also won the 500 free in 4:51.10.

Jake Mitchell led the way in the men’s 500 free, hitting the wall in 4:24.92 to claim first place. Mitchell finished second in the 200 free and was third in the 400 free relay in his debut at Gator.

Nina Kucheran earned three wins in her Florida debut, winning the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 medley relay.

Diving

Carina Lumia swept the women’s diving competition, winning the 1m and 3m, while Anton Svirskyi scored 18 points with wins in the 1m and 3m.
