Cristiano Ronaldo sets World Cup record in controversial fashion against Ghana

It’s official: Cristiano Ronaldo He is the first player in history to score all five (yes, FIVE) FIFA World Cups.

The man who recently left manchester united in acrimonious fashion opened the scoring for Portugal against Ghana on Thursday night.

Ronaldo’s first goal at the 2022 World Cup follows goals from 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.

However, their successful effort against Ghana came under rather controversial circumstances.

Fernando Santos’s team struggled immensely to subdue their stubborn and well-coached opponent, particularly in what was a very dull first half.

But just after the hour mark at Stadium 974, Portugal were awarded a penalty after Ronaldo was ‘fouled’ by Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

And to say it was smooth would be the understatement of all understatements.

There seemed to be minimal contact with Ronaldo inside the box and the 37-year-old certainly dropped to the ground dramatically.

However, the VAR refused to intervene and annul the referee’s sanction, since it did not consider a ‘clear and evident’ error.

See for yourself the penalty shootout debacle…

Yeah, that’s not a penalty, is it?

Portugal certainly had luck on their side there, although there was absolutely nothing lucky about Ronaldo’s resounding penalty.

He is a master from 12 meters and no goalkeeper in the world would have come close to his rocket shot.

It’s not bad, Cristiano, it’s not bad at all. That’s now 118 international goals for the real Madrid legend, which really is an extraordinary account.

Ronaldo is also the youngest and oldest goalscorer for his country in a World Cup.

Portugal finally secure priceless victory after Ghana’s comeback

Shortly after Ronaldo set a new World Cup record, Ghana equalized through former Swansea City striker Andre Ayew.

Unfortunately for the Black Stars, the team’s sweeping play seemed to bring Portugal to life.

Joao Félix made it 2-1 with a brilliant finish, before substitute Rafael Leao ended the game with a great forehand effort. Both goals were assisted by midfield master Bruno Fernandes.

Osman Bukari made things incredibly nervous for Portugal late on by making it 3-2 with a close-range header, but the Iberian nation held on for a priceless victory on their World Cup debut.
