Australian Open 2023: Frances Tiafoe’s fashion statement divides tennis and Nike

World No. 17 Frances Tiafoe captured the attention of the tennis world after he kicked off his Australian Open campaign in most flashy fashion.

Tiafoe notched a 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier on the opening day of the tournament, but it was his bold style that caught people’s attention.

Tiafoe, who reached the US Open semifinals in a breakout performance last season and helped the US win in the inaugural United Cup, made waves in his psychedelic Nike look.

Away from Wimbledon, where it made international headlines when the traditional house of tennis finally allowed women to wear black briefs this year, the Australian Open and the US and French Opens allow players to follow the fashion.

While other Nike athletes have opted for simple shorts or skirts with a colorful top or colorful shorts and a simple top, Tiafoe went all out.

Her compatriot Coco Gauff said that her compatriot took off her look.

“There’s a lot going on, but I feel like that’s Frances Tiafoe,” Gauff said.

“You have a lot to do. He is never quiet, he is always loud.

“I think the outfit represents that. Loud and proud, and I think that’s Big Foe.”

However, social media was somewhat divided on the look, although no one was sitting on the fence.

ESPN’s Zenia D’cunha tweeted: “Frances Tiafoe wins her first round opener and Swag Slam kit contest in this setting at #AusOpen.”

Emily Benammar of Newscorp called Taifoe’s outfit “glorious”.

Gaspar Ribeiro Lanca of Racquet Magazine wrote: “What is Frances Tiafoe wearing?”

Sportswriter Jacob Cersomsimo added: “An all-time set from Big Foe in #AO2023.”

Emma Raducanu wore a more subdued version of the previous outfit, rocking the skirt and earning a tic of approval.

The Melbourne collection includes a colorful abstract print. Raducanu was wearing the spring dress when he made a powerful start against Tamara Korpatsch at 1573 Arena.

“Nike finally seems to have a decent slam kit after years,” one fan tweeted.

While the tennis podcast added: “This Nike kit is fire.”

“Beautiful kit,” added another.
